3 days in Kuala Lumpur: a day-by-day sightseeing plan

Kuala Lumpur grew up where two rivers meet, and today its mosques, colonial buildings and glass towers sit close together, which suits a plan of short walks with a few taxi rides. Day one goes from the Petronas Towers to the river confluence at Masjid Jamek, day two stays around the Lake Gardens with the National Mosque and three museums, and day three links a modern mosque, the National Monument and Merdeka Square before an optional museum out of the centre.

Day 1

The Petronas Towers, KLCC Park and Masjid Jamek

    Petronas Towers

    KLCC Park

    KLCC Park

    Sultan Abdul Samad Jamek Mosque

    Sultan Abdul Samad Jamek Mosque

    About 30 min

Masjid Jamek stands where the Klang and Gombak rivers meet, the spot that gave Kuala Lumpur its name, and its domes and arches mix Moorish and Mughal styles. Dress modestly, visit outside prayer times, and walk along the riverside afterwards.

Day 2

  1. 09:00
    National Mosque of Malaysia

    National Mosque of Malaysia

    National Museum of Malaysia

    About 1 h 30 min

The museum's roof follows traditional Malay palace design, and its galleries run from early prehistory through the Malay sultanates and the colonial era to independence. It ends the day, so take the full slot.

  1. 09:00
    Federal Territory Mosque

    Federal Territory Mosque

    About 30 min

    Museum of Asian Art

    Museum of Asian Art

    About 1 h 30 min

This university museum at Universiti Malaya shows ceramics and art from across Asia. It is out of the centre and needs a taxi, so treat it as optional and check its opening hours before you go.

Good to know

  • KL is hot and humid all year, with heavy afternoon showers, so plan outdoor walks for the morning and carry a small umbrella.
  • Mosques expect arms and legs covered, and women also cover their hair; most lend robes and scarves at the entrance.
  • Ride-hailing apps and metered taxis are the easiest way to cover the longer gaps, such as Federal Territory Mosque to the National Monument on day three.
  • Book the Petronas Towers Skybridge ahead if you want to go up; the timed slots often sell out.
  • You can open this plan in Atlazi and change it to your pace.
