The Little Mermaid, the Marble Church, Amalienborg and Nyhavn

The Little Mermaid
Edvard Eriksen's bronze of Hans Christian Andersen's mermaid is small, about 1.25 metres tall, and sits on a rock by the Langelinie promenade. Look at it briefly and spend the rest of the slot walking through Kastellet, the star-shaped fortress next to it, on your way south.

Frederik's Church
The Marble Church lines up with Amalienborg across the square and has one of the largest church domes in Scandinavia. Step inside to look up into the dome, which takes only a few minutes, then cross the street into the palace square.

Amalienborg
The Danish royal family lives in these four identical Rococo palaces around an octagonal square, with the equestrian statue of Frederik V at its centre. The Royal Guard changes in the square every day, and the Amalienborg Museum in one of the palaces shows royal rooms.

Nyhavn
The 17th-century canal with its painted townhouses and old wooden ships is the classic Copenhagen view, and Hans Christian Andersen lived at numbers 18, 20 and 67. Canal boat tours leave from here, and from the end of the quay a footbridge takes you across the harbour to Christianshavn.

Church of Our Saviour
Across the harbour in Christianshavn, this Baroque church is known for its spire with an outside spiral staircase that you can climb for a view over the city. The last turns get narrow and exposed, so skip the climb on windy days or if you dislike heights; the tower can close in bad weather.
